Jeep Replacement Seats 101: What You Need to Know

When one thinks of the wear-items on a Jeep, they think of things like tires, brakes, and clutches.  But a true Jeep owner knows that you can count on replacing your seats every few seasons if you really use your Jeep.  That’s because the way we use our Jeeps leaves them exposed to some very harsh conditions that are going to test the endurance of even the best quality Jeep seat.  From desert heat to jungle humidity to arctic cold, they’re going to see all of these.  And usually while covered in a fine coat of whatever we’re driving through at the moment.

And, like tires, brakes, and clutches, substandard Jeep seats are a huge liability when you’re far from paved roads.  Even if it looks good, it’s got to carry its occupants across the worst of what nature has to offer and deliver us in a condition to complete whatever mission we are on.  That’s the difference between a real Jeep seat and a seat to get us to the convenience store and back.

Here at RacingSeatsUSA, we understand what works as a Jeep replacement seat and what doesn’t.  And we only carry those brands that will deliver time-and-time again—not cheap, off-shore manufactured knock-off seats but brands that have the reputation for being the finest.  Of the great brands we offer, we especially recommend Corbeau and Simpson brand seats as being the best starting place for replacing the seats in your Jeep.  Here is what to look for:

Suspension Style Seats: It is important to use the right tool for the job.  There is nothing wrong with a hammer or a screwdriver, but if you need a combination wrench then neither of those is going to work.  Likewise, you can probably skip past other seat types and go straight for a suspension seat.  As the name implies, these suspend the occupant in a firm webbing that provides both comfort and security.

Jeep Seat Mounting: Jeep seats are not mounted to the floor—they would be much too low.  They are on a taller bracket specifically made for the application.  For Jeep Seats from Simpson, we recommend Planted Technology brackets.  They have direct-fit brackets for Jeeps manufactured from 1997 and later, and for Grand Cherokee manufactured after 2005.  But Corbeau offers seat brackets to mount Corbeau Seats for these plus the Grand Wagoneer, J10, and Commanche, making Corbeau the champion of Jeep seat mounting options.

Jeep Seat Accessories:  If you are replacing factory Jeep seats, or if it’s been a few years since you’ve last replaced your Jeep seats, you may not be aware of the incredible accessories that are available.  Safety is paramount, so be sure to look long and hard at your existing seat belts.  It may be time to replace them with a set of harness belts and pads.  And if you’re doing your off-roading in the cold, you have no idea how essential a seat heater can be to keeping your core temperature up.
